近年, 紅衣團(Red coat tours)在歐洲很盛行. 對於散客, 紅衣團的確是一個很好的安排. 它可以讓你對這個地方有一個初步的了解. 然後, 若你有更多的時間, 就可以選擇你的重點和更深入地去玩. Exeter紅衣團更是一個免費的導賞團, 導游是當地熱心的公公婆婆.
在Exeter期間, 我參加了3個紅衣團(Red coat tours): Medieval Exeter, Churches, cemeteries and catacomb 和Forgotten Exeter and tuckers’ hall. 因為都在Cathedral close 出發, 所以都有對Cathedral的介紹 (Medieval Exeter團介紹最多, 也是最值得參加的團).

Medieval Exeter

1. Cathedral close:
Cathedral旁的草地原是墓地. 人們要葬在這裡要付款給Cathedral. 但草地面積有限,只有向上堆, 形成人疊人 (在亞洲, 有誰會用這樣的埋葬方式?). 據說, 土堆高約一人高, 到Cathedral得窗下. 所以, 墓地要搬到城外. 當然, 原本已葬下的也要搬走.
在過去的歷史裡, Cathedral是不斷改建, 甚至是大改. 例如由Norman式(較為笨重)變為Gothic哥德式(尖頂). 但Cathedral兩翼的高樓就保留了Norman式(圓拱形窗).
Cathedral前原有另一座教堂, 在戰後拆了(好像是火災). 而在清拆那座教堂的時候, 就挖出了羅馬人的浴場遺址.
Cathedral正面有很多浮雕, 分三層(聖人, 國王, angel). 據圖, 浮雕古時是彩色. 正門最高處卻有一個露體男性現代雕像.
2. bishop’s palace garden (Cathedral close no.10 and 11)
如果不說, 或許你經過了, 也沒注意到. 古老的木門雕刻精美, 花園細小,沒多少看的, 只是感受一下.
3. parliament street:
據說是世上最窄的巷子.

古時selling water and bear
5. an old medieval house at north street:
一場火災之後, 除了這屋, 其他舊木屋都燒了. 也因此, 人們發現了木牆上那些被灰塵封蓋了的圖案. 現在, 這是一間隱蔽的餐館. 不帶你去, 你很難發現.

古時, 這是最主要的通道, steep and stone paved

19??年, 因為興建城市繞道, 房屋整座平移.

the remained ruin on bridge is an old church. The bridge was previous covered with houses.
10. Along old wall above cricklepit mill
Before industrial revolution in 1800, Exeter was rich due to wool trade.
11. Custom house
The house was expanded twice due to good business.
Churches, cemeteries and catacomb
帶你走進很多小教堂. You will notice there are so many churches in such a small district around the Cathedral.
Main points:

3. 在18??, 盜屍作醫學研究嚴重, 故建這有看守的陵墓. 但因收費太高, 只有20多人在此安葬.
在外面, 你以為是幾間小房間, 但令你意料之外, 裡面是打通的, 空間很大. 不過, 每個墓地的空間很細, 有如停屍間的擺放.
